Cold weather is looming in the not too distant future. As temperatures drop, we’re going to see less sunlight as well as the start of cold and flu season. With this in mind, many people will begin looking for ways to prevent the winter blues and coming down with illnesses. Fortunately, there are ways you can maintain good physical and mental health as the weather turns colder.

Exercise

Staying active is part of what we all do to stay physically fit. Exercise also plays a huge role in our mental health. Those who regularly participate in some form of activity are happier than those who don’t. This is due in large part to the endorphins our brains release as we exercise. Group exercise is especially beneficial as it allows for social interaction and support. If you’re looking for a place to start, check out some of our classes

Meditation

Taking time out of your day to mediate is an extremely important habit to adopt. Meditation allows us to get in tune with ourselves, body and mind. While this practice is commonly thought of as a mental health technique, it also offers several physical health benefits as well. Meditating can help lower your blood pressure and heart rate, improve your immune and cardiovascular systems and help with headaches. One of the most common methods is Anapana Sati meditation which has roots in Buddhism and helps practitioners find enlightenment and peace.

Sleep

Sleep is the key to maintaining both physical and mental health. It’s highly important that you are getting a full eight hours every night, as a less amount or disrupted sleep is linked to weight gain and depression. If you’re having trouble getting comfortable, the first thing you should do is check your mattress. If it’s lumpy, sagging or has just been a while, it’s time for a new one. You should also remove any electronic devices from your bedside to further ensure a good night’s rest.

Self-Care

It’s really important for you to take time for yourself. Doing the things you enjoy will make you happier and therefore contribute to a positive mental state. While the term self-care probably brings up images of a spa day, it is actually so much more than that. There are plenty of simple things you can do everyday that will contribute to your personal self-care journey. Find something that will work for you and lead to your happiness.
