Yoga is one of the oldest form of movement to promote health and well-being. There is an increase in research on how practising yoga effects the mind psychologically. This is why many professional athletes are taking to yoga. Even professional gymnast who are flexible and extremely strong, practice yoga for the mental benefits. While the physical benefits are important the mental strength and clarity provided in yoga is what keeps people come back to this 5000 year old practice.

As you could imagine or maybe you know from experience, the pressure of being professional athletes is very unforgiving. The team, coaches, and fans are watching your every move and counting on you to always perform at at 110%. Athletes in one of the more popular areas of sports like the NBA, NHL, NFL/CFL your every move is caught on camera. There is a lot on the line for athletes. Having an ‘off day’ isn’t just noticed by you, it’s noticed by everyone. The stress and over thinking of it, it was can send people over the edge. Like anyone under stress or pressure, it is common to experience changes in mood, sleep, and eating patterns. All of which are absolutely essential in maintaining good mental and physical strength needed in ones area of expertise.

The mental benefits if yoga include, stress relief, calmness, more rational thinking, body awareness and confidence. It also helps with symptoms of depression and sleeping issues. It is also suggested that the yoga increases chemicals in your brain to help to regulate nerve activity. Aiding those who struggle with anxiety disorders. Compassion and non-judgment are a huge part in the teachings of yoga. The philosophy incorporated into classes, teaches that each day is different. It shines a light on the fact that we are all human and to honor our bodies and our abilities. For athletes, this gives them opportunity to practice and build at their own pace rather than meet the standards of their sport.

The breathing techniques and meditation aspects in yoga, allow us to separate our minds from daily tasks and stresses. It is in away giving yourself a break but in productive way. Research shows that the relaxation in yoga and meditation, has immediate positive changes in the immune system, and energy metabolism. That being said, yoga would most defiantly benefit and athlete in the midst of a season. Giving them the mental clarity to perform at their best, allow for more adequate rest when not in action.

Many athletes believe in the power of visualization, they see things happening before it is done. There concentration in the moment needs to be on point. With a clear, calm mind and the ability to breath and use the techniques taught in yoga, they have a high chance of success in the game. There is a likelihood of a longer lasting career, and can be a tool used when they choose to retire. Many athletes can struggle with depression once they are no longer able to continue. Yoga is something they can stick with for a life time. They non judgement and self confidence can keep them on a path of happiness on and off the field, ice, floor, court, or track.
