It is no surprise we live in a very stimulated world. While this is an exciting time, it is important to balance things out by centering your energy and getting grounded again. Grounding yourself means to turn inward and be present in the moment. We spend so much time knee deep in worrying about the future and holding on to our past. Getting grounded through meditation is a great way to balance our energy.

There are many different types of meditation, but the main objective of all of them is the same. To find inner peace or clarity. Some estimate we have 50,000 – 70,00 thoughts going through our mind everyday. Meditation is a way to train yourself to focus on nothing or very little. So without 50,000 – 70,000 thoughts flying around at an overwhelming rate, you could imagine how satisfying it would be to slow them down. The key to your meditation is to focus on something simple. Focus on your breathing, a mantra, or sensation like the tip of your nose. This allows you to not only control your thoughts but pulls your energy inward. It separates you from the tasks, responsibilities, and expectations you give your attention to all day. A helpful mantra is to say “It is safe for me to be here.” This mantra makes me feel like I can relax and I can allow myself to be present in the moment.

Grounding yourself also has physical effects on the body. I had experienced this myself when I was going through a difficult time in my personal life. I found when stress levels were at it highest, I would experience bad lower back pain. Although I had injured my back in a fall, that area of my body is the most venerable. I had recently downloaded a guided meditation app and had been using it daily for about a week. This one particular day my back was throbbing and had actually been hurting for a few days. I sat down to meditate using my app and had accidently pressed pause at the silent part of the guided meditation. During that accidental pause I had the best meditations. I opened my eyes thinking ‘that guy hasn’t said anything in awhile’… I looked at my phone and realized I had paused it and that 15 minutes had gone by. I felt amazing and was impressed with myself but was now running 10 minutes behind in getting ready to carry on with the rest of my day. About 20 minutes later I noticed my back pain was gone completely and didn’t come back for quite some time. I realized that if I was ever going to feel better physically and mentally I need to get myself grounded and lessen my attachment to unnecessary external circumstances.

Turning your energy inward you will feel calm, relaxed, secure and in control. That grounded energy provides detachment from unnecessary thoughts or things. You will have that level headedness, making it easier to handle what life throws at you by thinking things through and not having reactionary response. A more peaceful energy within you will attract a more peaceful life.
