Self-discipline is a life skill for the successful. It is having the power to stay focused and not giving into distractions. Finding a goal and sticking to it until it is a reality, or using self-discipline to maintain success or a particular lifestyle. Having self-discipline isn’t just about the repetition of doing something, it’s about keeping your focus while conditions and circumstances change around you. Gaining the ability not to give into excuses.
Having been a dancer for 24 years, I grew up with a commitment to my craft. I got to enjoy my youth but I also developed self-discipline skills at young age that led me to my success now. I spent countless hours in the studio and often missed events and time with friends. This was by choice, I had a goal and was committed to it. In my experience there were many days when I was training when my body ached and my mind was fried. The self-discipline I had gave me the ability to find the energy and not the excuses.
Yoga allows you to build on this is class. There is a deep connection between mind and body that is brought to your attention in class. The ‘mind over matter’ is finding the voice in your head that says you got this, rather than ‘I can’t’. There no distractions. The instructors are encouraging and you will find inspiration around the room. The class room setting in energy, forces more focus in the moment and increase physical ability.
It is important to target where in your life you need to freshin’ up your self-disciple in order to achieve your goals. Here are 5 simple tips and tricks you can use to increase success in your self-discipline.
- Define what you want. What is it that your wishing to achieve? Be clear on the steps it will take to get you there.
- Remove any obstacles. There maybe certain habits, maybe certain people that get in your way of having self control. Maybe they conflict with your goals, or have bad influences on you.
- Create a routine. Set yourself up for success.
- Find a someone or something to look up to
- Give yourself the reward. All hard work should be balanced with reward. Something simple that wont throw you off track.
