One thing most of us don’t do enough of, is take time for ourselves. There never seems to be enough hours in a day to get the things you need to do, done, let alone have time to spare. With todays economy, many statistics show that growing number of people have multiple jobs just to stay afloat. That must mean we are working more hours and more days, leaving little to no time to enjoy life. Although we can’t do much about the economy, we can do something about the way we spend our time regardless of how many jobs we have and costs nothing.
In previous blogs we talked about routines and how important they are to ensure efficiency and success. When we make our routine, we usually prioritize our jobs, our families & our homes to name a few. While all of those things are important, what good are we to our jobs and families if we don’t take care of ourselves? When we put everything before ourselves it’s not long after that we become disconnected, burnt out and unpleasant. Life just becomes difficult. Job performance can decline and we can even be resentful towards family members just from being so overwhelmed.
Taking a step back can relieve anxiety, and give you better clarity on what is happening around you. Finding time to yourself should be priority number one. Finding someway to relax or enjoy life should be done daily even if its only five minutes. And there are so many little things you can do to take time for yourself like, taking time in the morning to have a coffee by yourself, meditating, exercising, reading, journaling, have a weekly date night with a friend or lover, having a glass of wine at the end of the day and watching something funny on TV. The list could go on.
Life is short, it is important to balance things out. Sometimes we need to say ‘no’ to certain things so we can just chill out. It is ok to be selfish if it benefiting your wellbeing, it will benefit everyone in the end. When we do this for ourselves it establishes boundaries and self respect. There is no sense in burning yourself out, that’s when mistakes happen and things could go down hill. Make yourself a priority, do something that you will enjoy. You will quickly see how much better you will feel.
Like Ferris Bueller say’s “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
