Tis the season for many things; giving, spending, family, friends, but it is also a time you may experience extra stress. Ensure you follow these tips to help you deal if Santa also brings you some holiday blues.

  1. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect. Things don’t always go as planned and there are many things that are out of our control. Try to keep your expectations in check and when all else fails… laugh. Laugh at yourself or the situation because there is no better way to help to see the lighter side of things then smile.
  2. Make sure you don’t over book yourself. Over scheduling and taking on too many tasks can make us feel overwhelmed. Learn to say no and if possible ask for help. Sometimes by doing less we have the energy to enjoy the most important things of the holidays, friends and family.
  3. Don’t overspend, remember it’s about the thought and being with one another that is important. Not how much we spend on one another. Try and give the gift of time this holiday season. Go out for a dinner together or take in a show and spend time with those you love, but above all be present.
  4. Watch your diet and don’t forget to stick with your routine. We all tend to eat a bit more over the holidays, but be aware of what you are eating and drinking. Remember certain foods and lack of exercise can affect your mood. Sweet and sugary foods will give you less energy which can make you feel run down and less likely to get to yoga or the gym. Maybe adding in a holiday walk after a big meal will help you feel more like sticking to your routine.
  5. Plan ahead. If you can prepare any of your meals in advance or do any of your shopping to avoid the holiday rush make sure you do so.
  6. Make a list. It is easy to feel overwhelmed when we have a million things going around and around in our heads. Spend some time creating a list of what needs to be done and even prioritise the list so you know what and when to get things done.
  7. Do yoga and don’t forget to breath. Yoga and pranayama (breath work) can help to lower your stress. Plus spending an hour on our own getting out of our head is bound to make anyone feel better.
  8. Better yet… do Hot Yoga! Sweat out some toxins, feel the warmth of the infrared heat and stretch away your worries. It always make me feel better… why not give it a try!
